Driving down the risk - the trilogy!
An initiative aimed at reducing the number of deaths and serious injuries on roads in North Warwickshire is coming to an end, with the final course taking place on Saturday 21 October.
The possibility of being killed or seriously injured on the roads in North Warwickshire is on average higher than the rest of the county. In order to combat this Warwickshire Fire and Rescue established and piloted the ‘Driving Down the Risk’ scheme, specifically targeting the high-risk group of young people aged 18 to 24.
The pilot scheme comprised of three courses, the first of which ran in April 2005. Since that time around 30 young people have taken part in the scheme, 98% of which passed the Institute of Advanced Motorists – Advanced Driving Test.
Area Risk Officer, Scott Moultrie said:
“The course has proven to be a very successful and 98% of candidates have now achieved the Institute of Advanced Motorists – Advanced Driving Test. This is a great achievement for all of the young people involved in the project and these new skills should now help them to be safer when driving on roads in North Warwickshire.”
The three courses covered a range of driving issues including advanced driving techniques, poor driving, hazard perception and the consequences of accidents. Students also travelled out in police cars with the police driving instructors to demonstrate their driving techniques.
The scheme is run by firefighters from Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service in partnership with Warwickshire Police and the Institute of Advanced Motorists.
