Home composting can protect your identity

The humble compost bin could be the secret weapon against identity thieves and the trauma this fast growing crime can cause.

This week (16th – 22nd October 2006) is National Identity Fraud Prevention Week – and according to Recycle Now, the government-funded recycling campaign for England, shredded bank statements and credit card bills can be added to your compost bin, where they can be transformed into nutritious free-of-charge compost for your garden.
While most people know that you can compost twigs and dead leaves from the garden and vegetable peelings from the kitchen, not many people know that paper is also a great ingredient for the compost bin.
Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “One third of your household waste can be recycled by home composting. Alongside cardboard and paper, other great organic waste ingredients such as egg shells, tissues, pet hair and the contents of your vacuum cleaner can also be easily composted.“

By recycling shredded documents in your own garden, you can be safe in the knowledge that your valuable details are not falling in to the wrong hands – and that you are doing your bit to divert organic waste from landfill sites.

If you don’t already compost at home then there couldn’t be a better time to get started.  Compost bins are available from as little as £4 – check out the website http://www.recyclenow.com/compost or call 0845 600 0323.
