Simple advice could keep you safe this Bonfire Night

There were 89 injuries from fireworks recorded in the West Midlands last year, so Warwickshire Fire & Rescue Service are reminding residents to take extra care as they enjoy Bonfire Night this weekend.

The majority of accidents occur at family or private parties and are caused through the misuse of fireworks, failure to observe the firework code and the consumption of alcohol. Bonfires are often the main attraction at parties to celebrate Guy Fawkes Night and, unless they are built and lit properly, can also be potentially dangerous to buildings, animals and people.

The festivities inevitably result in a considerable increase in the number of calls to the fire brigade, so Warwickshire Fire & Rescue are therefore urging people to take care with fireworks and make sure their bonfire is a safe one.

William Brown, County Fire Officer, said: “There are some simple rules to follow when building and lighting your bonfire. For example, bonfires should be sited at least 15 metres away from buildings, roads, hedges and fences and 50 metres away from any roads.

“Try to build your bonfire on the day of the event as this should prevent any unsuitable materials being added to it. One person should be appointed to look after the bonfire and they should also be responsible for lighting it.”

Fireworks also need to be handled with care. William Brown continues: “You should always buy fireworks marked with BS 7114, which is the British Standard safety mark. Never go near a firework that has been lit – even if it hasn’t gone off, it could still explode.

“I want the people of Warwickshire to have an enjoyable Bonfire Night and the safest way to enjoy fireworks is actually to go to an organised firework party.”

There is much more advice on having a safe bonfire and handling fireworks safely on the Warwickshire Fire & Rescue Service website.
