Over 1,000 council employees pledge their pennies to charity

Over 1,000 kind-hearted staff from Warwickshire County Council have already signed up to a scheme that enables them to donate the ‘spare’ pennies from their pay packets every month to two Warwickshire hospice charities.

The ‘Pennies from Heaven’ scheme, which was only launched by the county council last month, invites employees to round down their monthly pay to the nearest pound and donate the pennies left over to the council’s two nominated charities: the Mary Ann Evans Hospice and The Myton Hospices.

Martyn Thompson, Deputy Head of Human Resources at Warwickshire County Council, said: “In the first four weeks we had well over 1,000 staff sign up which has so far raised over £500 for the charities. We expect this to continue to rise month by month.”

The Warwickshire hospices provide specialised care for people with life limiting illnesses and both charities will receive an equal share of the amount donated. The charities will also be able to gift aid the donations, adding another 28 pence to every pound staff contribute.

All of Warwickshire County Council’s 18,000 staff are being encouraged to pledge their pennies and sign up to the scheme, which could raise tens of thousands of pounds for the charities.
