Plenty pledge to ‘Switch it off’

More than 300 people have pledged to do far more to help protect the environment by thinking a little more about the energy they waste at home.

Last week saw Warwickshire County Council take to the streets of the county in a bid to drive home the `Switch it off – Don’t just stand by and waste energy’ message.

While meeting the local population the council staff were joined by Warwickshire Energy Efficiency Advice Centre representatives to urge people to put their name to a pledge to use less energy.

And more than 300 people signed up to the pledge, with many more taking away pledge leaflets. The pledge is to do some or all of the following:

- When making hot drinks only boil as much water as I need.
- Turn down my thermostat by one degree Celsius.
- Switch off appliances and not leave them on stand by.
- Install cavity wall insulation.
- Top up my loft insulation to 270mm (10.5 inches).
- Replace three lightbulbs with energy saving ones.
- Install a condensing boiler.
- Buy Energy Saving recommended appliances.
- Wash my laundry at 30 degrees Celsius.
- Leave my car at home for short car journeys.

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “We can all follow some of these simple pledges to make a dramatic difference to the environment and help prevent climate change.”
