Temporary speed camera at Barford bypass roadworks a success
The temporary speed camera installed by Warwickshire Casualty Reduction Partnership on the southern approach to the Barford bypass roadworks has been removed following completion of the current phase of works.
The camera was installed at the request of site contractor GallifordTry to encourage motorists to observe the temporary 30mph speed limit imposed for the safety of construction workers and the travelling public.
A speed survey taken before the camera was installed showed 85% of traffic was exceeding the temporary speed limit with a quarter of drivers travelling in excess of 45mph. Traffic light controls meant queuing traffic was expected immediately after a left hand bend with limited visibility. GallifordTry and Warwickshire Casualty Reduction Partnership were concerned motorists exceeding the 30mph speed limit on this bend may have been unable to stop before reaching the stationary traffic. The camera was also designed to protect construction workers operating in close proximity to the road and traffic.
A speed survey taken after the camera was installed showed the number of motorists exceeding 45mph had fallen to 0.3% and there were no collisions recorded while the camera was active.
County Councillor Martin Heatley, Environment Cabinet Portfolio holder said:
“The speed camera at the Barford roadworks was installed for genuine safety reasons and because so many motorists were choosing to ignore the temporary speed limit. I am pleased to learn that there were no collisions at the traffic light controls when the camera was in operation.”
