Domestic Violence Week highlights a hidden problem

Events to highlight the serious, yet hidden problem of domestic violence will take place around Warwickshire next week.

Domestic Violence Awareness Week begins on Monday 20 November 2006 and events organised by Warwickshire County Council’s Domestic Abuse Multi Agency Team (DAMAT) include the launch of the Domestic Abuse Website and leaflet.

Caroline Blackburn, Domestic Violence Manager said:
“Domestic abuse is a crime and can exist in many forms.  Domestic abuse is not just about physical violence, but can include emotional, sexual or financial harm.  No one has to accept abuse, everyone has rights in law to be protected and a number of services exist in Warwickshire to offer support and information.  The website and leaflet have been launched to help people understand they may be experiencing domestic abuse and to find about their rights and the services that are available. “

On average:
· Domestic violence accounts for approximately 15% of violent crime nationally, accounting for 31% of all violence against women and 5% of all violence against men.
·  On average, two women a week are killed by a current or former male partner.
· One in four women and one in six men will be a victim of DV in their lifetime, and women experience a greater risk of repeat victimisation and serious injury.
· Eighty-nine per cent of those suffering four or more incidents of DV are women.
· One incident of DV is reported to the police every minute.
