A safer route for walkers and cyclists
Work got underway this week on a scheme to help walkers and cyclists cross the road at a busy junction in Leamington.
Pedestrian and cycle facilities are being installed at the junction of Newbold Terrace and Willes Road, assisting cycle access between Newbold Terrace and the footpath/cyclepath on Newbold Terrace East.
This path forms part of the National Cycle Network Route 41, which runs from Warwick to Leamington, and then on to Rugby. National body Sustrans has backed Warwickshire County Council’s efforts in installing the facilities at the junction, as access to and from the Newbold Terrace East path is currently difficult.
The scheme will also help people walking and cycling to the Newbold Comyn Leisure Centre at the end of Newbold Terrace East, as well as helping pedestrians crossing all arms of this busy junction.
Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “Schemes like this are crucial to ensure safe passage for cyclists and pedestrians. It’s no use us encouraging people out of their cars and onto their bikes, if the network isn’t there to support them.”
The works got underway on Monday and are likely to take around four weeks to complete.
