Welcome news for Rugby Western Relief Road

Warwickshire County Council has welcomed the news that the Secretary of State for Transport has given the green light to the new Rugby Western Relief Road.

On Thursday the Department for Transport (DfT) confirmed the Compulsory Purchase and Side Roads Orders for the published scheme with minor modifications that have been agreed already.

This decision follows the re-convened public inquiry in Rugby in March last year and the Minister’s decision letter the following December asking the County Council to consider modifying the scheme in line with the Inspector’s recommendations. The main change to the scheme is on the A4071 at Potford’s Dam where the relief road will now terminate in a roundabout close to the bridge

There is a statutory six-week High Court Challenge period following publication of the confirmation of the Orders before the Orders can be finalised.

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Porfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “It is too soon to give a start date for construction as there are still a number of processes to go through.

“Subject to there being no challenge the DfT then has to give full approval of funding for the scheme, the detailed design has to be completed and the county council’s Cabinet has to approve the award of the construction contract. As a result of this and possible environmental constraints, the work is unlikely to start before May of next year.”
