The 12 walks of Christmas

There are now twelve more reasons for people to get out into Warwickshire’s beautiful countryside.

Even with winter fast approaching the county is still a great place to explore on foot, which is why Warwickshire County Council’s Countryside Recreation Group has put together a pack of 12 colourful leaflets providing details of attractive walks and gentle strolls, suitable for all abilities.

The pack has been designed to give people all the information they need to have a great day out in the countryside, offering a chance to walk off some of those festive feasts in pleasant surroundings.

It includes walks throughout the county of Warwickshire, with routes around lakes, along canals, through woods and across parks.

All the walks are easy to complete, with the shortest being less than half a mile and the longest four and a half miles. Many of the walks in the pack are suitable for less able people or those in wheelchairs or pushchairs and each leaflet gives helpful information about the length of the route, the surface of the paths and the types of gates and facilities at the site.

Country Parks Visitor Manager, Sally Silk, said: “This pack of walk leaflets will give everyone the opportunity to have a great day out in the country. Not only do each of the leaflets give details of a great walk but they also provide information on other places to visit in the vicinity of the route.”

According to health experts, seven out of every ten adults do not take enough exercise to benefit their health. Walking is described as the almost perfect exercise – almost anyone can do it, it can be done anywhere and at any time, with no need for special equipment, you can start slowly and build up gently and it’s free.

Regular brisk walking can improve confidence, stamina, energy, weight control and life expectancy. It can also reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, strokes, diabetes, high blood pressure, bowel cancer and osteoporosis. Now, with this set of 12 easy walks to get people started, there’s no excuse.

Sally added: “Why not purchase a pack - not just for yourself but also for your friends or relatives? It’s an ideal Christmas gift!“
