New Speed Cameras for Hillmorton Road

Warwickshire Casualty Reduction Partnership are installing two new fixed speed cameras on Hillmorton Road, Rugby.

Work to install the cameras will start this week. Between 2003 and 2005, 5 people sustained serious injuries in collisions on a 1.15km stretch of the road and a further 16 people suffered slight injuries. More than half of the 15,000 vehicles that use the road every day are currently exceeding the 30mph speed limit. The Partnership is also setting up a mobile enforcement site on High Street Hillmorton.

Warwickshire’s existing speed cameras have proved a great success in slowing traffic and reducing the number and severity of crashes. There were 74% fewer people killed or seriously injured at Warwickshire camera sites in 2005 compared to the pre-camera baseline (1994-98 annual average). Warwickshire Casualty Reduction Partnership expects the new Hillmorton Road cameras to make the road safer for all users and improve the quality of life for residents who live along the road.

County Councillor Martin Heatley, Environment Cabinet Portfolio holder said:
“Local residents regularly complain about the speed of traffic on Hillmorton Road and with so many collisions and such a high proportion of vehicles speeding it is easy to understand why. By slowing the traffic down these cameras should reduce the number and severity of collisions sustained on this busy road. I fully support the installation of the new speed cameras on Hillmorton Road and I hope motorists respond by ensuring they drive within the speed limit at all times.”

Estyn Williams, Warwickshire County Council Road Safety Manager and Chair of Warwickshire Casualty Reduction Partnership said:
“We are providing this advance warning to drivers because I want them to think about the speed they choose to drive at and, if necessary, to modify their driving behaviour to stay within the speed limits. Drivers who do so have nothing to fear from these cameras. The Partnership’s message is a very simple one, respect the speed limits for what they are – the maximum speed at which you are permitted to travel.”

The cameras will be located:
· Opposite the bowling green near the junction with Catesby Road
· Outside the church east of the roundabout with Whitehall Road

The new cameras meet the Department for Transports rigorous criteria for the installation of new fixed cameras. The cameras have been approved by the Government.

The partnership uses a mixture of fixed and mobile cameras. The new cameras will bring the total number of fixed speed camera sites in Warwickshire to 23 and the number of camera housings to 29.
