Passing Out Parade marks the launch of FLARE

Seven young people are getting ready to celebrate the successful completion of a pilot project during its official launch tomorrow.

FLARE – which is a new partnership between Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service, Warwickshire County Council and Connexions Coventry and Warwickshire, was developed to provide extra support for young people aged 15 – 17, who need confidence building, support and motivation.

The young people involved in this pilot project had to take part in a 16-day interactive training course, which included a range of exciting team building activities in a fire service setting. These include driver training, scooter safe, canoeing, sexual health and general health related issues and a trip to Coventry Airport to tackle a simulated aircraft fire.

Youth Development Manager, Cheryl Jones said:
“This is an exciting new stimulating and innovative course delivered in a working environment by trained fire-fighters. The course was established with the aim of helping young people to gain self-confidence, discipline and motivation.  The main aim of the project however, is to provide young people with the opportunity to express themselves in a safe and secure environment, whilst having fun.”

Connexions Delivery Manager, Kay Rush said:
“The qualities that young people develop while on the project will help them towards success in education, training or employment and we are delighted to have been involved with FLARE”

As well as taking part in the passing out parade, successful candidates will also receive a ‘Challenge Award’; a nationally recognised qualification accredited through the Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network. The next FLARE course will be running from Polesworth Fire station in the New Year.
