Warwick’s young firefighters should glow with pride

Young firefighters in Warwick should be glowing with pride on Monday 18 December, when they receive certificates of achievement from the county’s chief Fire Officer at a special event.

The 11 to 17-year-olds are members of the Warwick branch of Warwickshire’s Young Firefighters Association (YFA), who take part in a wide range of exciting events and activities throughout the year as well as learning firefighting skills.

The annual event, which will take place at Warwick Fire Station at 7pm, is an opportunity for the youngsters to show their parents and guardians what they have learnt throughout the year. They will also receive certificates of their achievement from County Fire Officer, William Brown.

Sue Such, a volunteer for the Warwick YFA, said: “The YFA is part of Warwickshire Fire & Rescue Service’s commitment to young people in the local community. The young firefighters meet once a week at their local fire station and operate on a similar basis to an operational fighting crew. Each youngster is issued with their own kit, which includes a uniform, operational drill wear, helmet and boots.

“They are trained to take part in practice fire drills and operate a variety of equipment under supervision, and also are introduced to the role of a modern firefighter, learn about the functions of a fire appliance and undertake various tasks in and around the station.”

The Warwick YFA is keen to recruit more youngsters aged 11 to 17 to join this fun scheme in the New Year. There are over 200 young firefighters across Warwickshire, operating from 13 fire stations across the county.

Over the last five years, members have attended a number of national and local Young Firefighter camps, which have proved to be great opportunities for team building, friendship and fun.
