What do you want in your stocking?
Firefighters in Stratford will be asking residents what they want in their stocking over the next few weeks at they continue their ‘Good Feeling Gone’ Christmas Fire Safety campaign.
In a bid to keep residents safe over the Christmas period, firefighters will be visiting local supermarkets targeting residents as they get set to buy their Christmas shopping. During the events residents will be able to get free fire safety advice and firefighters will be asking them to consider using a smoke alarm as a stocking filler for family and friends. There will also be an opportunity for parents with young children or elderly residents to sign up for a free home fire safety check.
Visits start this weekend at:
10 - 12pm: Thursday 14 December: Morrisons, Stratford
10 – 12pm: Saturday 16 December: Tesco’s, Stratford
2pm – 4pm: Tuesday 19 December: Tesco’s Stratford
10 – 12pm: Saturday 23 December: Tesco’s, Stratford
Area risk officer, Andy Thompson said:
“Christmas is a great time of year for friends and family come together to celebrate the festivities. However, with the increase in alcohol intake and the endless distractions of children playing with new toys and guests to cater for, fire safety is often the last thing on people’s minds.
“The aim of this campaign is to remind people that fire safety is more important than ever over the Christmas period. So please make sure that you follow a few simple guidelines so that Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service don’t have to visit you on Christmas day!”
· Decorations can burn easily – don’t attach them to lights or heaters. Fit and maintain smoke alarms on every level of your home.
· Celebrate Christmas and New Year safely. The risk of accidents, especially in the kitchen, is greater after alcohol is consumed.
· Check your Christmas tree lights conform to the British Standard. Always use a Residual Current Device on outdoor electrical equipment (safety device that can save lives by instantly switching off power).
· Switch off electrical items when not in use, unless they’re designed to stay on.
· Switch heaters off if you’re not in the room and also when you go to bed.
· Never leave cooking unattended – it’s very easy to be distracted when you are entertaining family or friends.
