Stay safe this Christmas
Enjoy Christmas but stay safe – that’s the message from local services that will be pitching up at a special market stall in Nuneaton on Wednesday 20 December.
Warwickshire’s Youth Offending Team, the Fire and Rescue Service, the Domestic Violence Support Service and the Teenage Pregnancy Team are just some of the services that will be offering advice at Nuneaton’s Market Square on Wednesday 20 December. Help and information will be available throughout the day from 10am.
Vicki Barnes of Warwickshire’s Youth Offending Team said: “The main message from the Youth Offending Team is for young people to have a fun and enjoyable Christmas but to be aware of their own safety and the safety of others”.
During the Christmas and New Year period, people can be easily distracted and can be vulnerable to accidental fires. Ade Mallaban, Community Protection Risk Manager for the Nuneaton area, said: “By taking a few simple steps this Christmas fire risks can be reduced around the home and everybody can enjoy a happy and fire safe Christmas.”
Christmas can also be a stressful time for many. Caroline Blackburn of the Domestic Violence Team said: “A combination of financial pressure, family commitments and alcohol tend to make Christmas one of the most vulnerable times for women and men who are experiencing domestic violence.”
Amy Barnes, Warwickshire County Council’s Teenage Pregnancy Coordinator, added: “At this time of year a lot of young people will be joining in with the celebrations and if there’s alcohol involved, many may be more inclined to take risks with their sexual health. That’s why in an effort to make sure that young people enjoy the party season in a safe and responsible way, we’re keen to highlight the number of services available over Christmas and New Year where people can receive free, confidential sexual health advice and contraception.”
The services, which will be at the market stall, include Warwickshire’s Youth Offending Team, the Fire and Rescue Service, the Domestic Violence Support Service, the Teenage Pregnancy Team, the Police, Nuneaton & Bedworth Leisure Trust and the Young Persons’ Substance Misuse Service.
