Warwickshire’s County Caterers raise the profile of bread-making
Local school children were busy kneading and shaping when they took part in a special bread-making session with Warwickshire’s County Caterers.
County Caterers have worked in partnership with the Brunswick Healthy Living Centre in Leamington Spa to pass on some of their cookery skills to the younger generation.
Rachel Brook, Development Manager for County Caterers, took a group of Key Stage 2 pupils from Kingsway Community Primary School in Leamington through the finer points of bread making. The session included a brief history of bread, a tasting in which pupils tried different types of bread, a look at how yeast works and, finally, a messy session kneading and shaping the dough ready for baking.
The bread-making initiative is part of County Caterers’ ongoing work to provide, and generate interest in, healthy school meals. County Caterers, which is part of the county council, introduced balanced menus ahead of Government requirements and long before Jamie Oliver’s programme.
Rachel Brook of Warwickshire’s County Caterers said: “Children should eat a wide variety of different foods in order to ensure they have a healthy, balanced diet. The best way to achieve this is to give them an enthusiasm for food and encourage them to try new things which is really what this session is all about.”
