Learning to safely surf the web
The North Warwickshire Adult and Community Learning Service is piloting a number of internet survival courses in the new year.
As more and more people are using the internet for banking and shopping, the range of crimes being committed online has also grown. Many people are wary of the internet due to rises in crimes such as online fraud, e-mail scams and identity theft.
Three courses, supported by Warwickshire Trading Standards, have been developed to cover basic internet skills, equipment set-up, software advice offering free firewalls and anti-virus spyware as well as providing practical advice and a host of entertaining multimedia demonstrations.
Uniquely, the course timetables are to be tailored to meet requirements. Course tutor Andy Pitcher is looking for people to call and express interest and will ask what their availability is. When six students are available at the same time, it will be viable to put a course on.
The courses are all to be delivered in Adult Community Learning’s Ratcliffe ICT Suite on Long Street, Atherstone.
Andy Pitcher said: “The internet has many uses that can benefit our lives and make everyday activities such as banking and some shopping far more convenient. However, people are wary that unscrupulous operators can access their details and steal their money if they put their bank details online.
“This course will help students to avoid these potential pitfalls, enhance their ability to get the most out of the web and be entertaining. We hope that the flexible policy of when the courses take place encourages as many people as possible to sign up.”
If you would like to take a course in internet survival, call Andy Pitcher on 01827 718007 and give him times and dates that you can make. He will contact you when enough students are available at that time to make up a class.
