New measures to safeguard children
Warwickshire County Council has launched a campaign to help parents and teachers tackle inappropriate use of the internet.
A free computer CD is being made available to parents containing advice on how to monitor internet usage at home.
And a sophisticated new electronic tracking system is being rolled out across schools in Warwickshire to allow staff to ensure that school computers are not being mis-used.
The system, called Policy Central, takes a screen shot of the computer if it is being used inappropriately – such as accessing pornography and using rude language.
The initiative comes as Warwickshire Safeguarding Children Board has published new guidance on child protection procedures. The updated ‘blue book’ reflects rising concern about eSafety and new legal requirements introduced by the Government. The Board is made up by agencies working with children and young people in Warwickshire. These include Warwickshire County Council, Warwickshire Police, the primary care trusts and the Probation Service.
Children who have been involved in inappropriate behaviour are offered support and counselling. More serious cases are referred to Warwickshire County Council’s Sexualised Inappropriate Behaviour Service. Experts working in the service have reported a rapid rise in the number of internet-related referrals.
Chris Hallett, Chair of the Warwickshire Safeguarding Children Board, said: “Safeguarding children is everybody’s business. We already have very robust procedures for professionals to follow in Warwickshire, and we are constantly seeking to improve these.
“New areas of risk are becoming apparent as technology develops, and these can affect children in the home as well as at school or in the community.
“I would urge parents not to over-react to these risks. We want our children and young people to have a balanced, rounded upbringing and we do not want to wrap them in cotton wool. But parents need support and advice so they can understand the issues and the free CD that we are offering will hopefully give some practical advice that will be re-assuring.”
To get the CD, which has been produced by Childnet International, parents should call 01926 414100 or email weshelpdesk@warwicskhire.gov.uk with their child’s name and the name of their school. The CD will be delivered to them via their school.
