Start the new year with a spring into books

Help is on hand for parents, carers and grandparents of young children who are entertaining young children indoors.

Spring into Books sessions are available free of charge at Rugby Library and at Rugby Parents Centre on Claremont Road.

The sessions at Rugby Library will begin on Wednesday 17 January at 9.30am and will run for the next three weeks, the last session falling on 7 February. Aimed at carers of pre-school age children, participants will share a story and then enjoy craft and ICT activities linked to that story.

Sessions at Rugby Parents Centre will run on Thursday afternoons from 1-3pm beginning Thursday 18 January until 8 February.  Aimed at carers of children in nursery and reception classes, participants will gain ideas to help them to make reading fun for young children

Heather Groocock, family learning worker, said:  “Engaging with children and helping to stimulate them to enjoy books and the related learning activities is of paramount importance to helping them to get the most out of books.

“However, there is a skill attached to getting a child’s attention and keeping it, as well as encouraging a child to join in with the activities that the story generates.

“Knowing what to do with the children beforehand makes it much easier for parents and carers to ensure that the child gets maximum benefit from activities such as reading.”
