Wonders of Victorian Pharmacy Revealed
Warwickshire Museum Service is exploring the world of the Victorian pharmacy on Wednesday 17 January at St. John’s House Museum with an evening talk entitled ‘Pills, powders and potions’.
The talk, hosted by Warwickshire County Council’s Heritage Education team, uses images of museum objects to illustrate how the process of buying and selling medicines has changed over the past 150 years. It also reveals some of the horrible remedies and unusual cures common at the time.
Visitors can also find out how the recent ‘Over the Counter’ exhibition was developed and take a close up look at some real objects from the museums collections. The ‘Over the Counter’ exhibition is still on display at St. John’s Museum and it recreates the sights and smells of a Victorian pharmacist’s shop.
Rebecca Williams, community project worker, said: “We hope the talk will appeal to everyone and even that those without any knowledge of pharmacy will be surprised and intrigued by the different attitudes to health and wellbeing in the past.”
The talk starts at 7:30PM in the Activity Centre at St John’s Museum. Tickets cost £2 and should be booked in advance by calling 01926 412034.
