Traffic calming interactive signs heralded

A £20,000 scheme to implement traffic calming measures in Coleshill has been hailed a success by local councillors.

Interactive signs in Coleshill through Gilson and on Station Road have been in place for two years and nearly 18 months respectively. At Gilson, the traffic, monitored by Warwickshire County Council’s traffic projects division is now passing through at 30mph rather than 40mph so is purely a speed reduction initiative whilst the signs have reduced traffic accidents by 50% in Station Road.

The Gilson signs were put up as part of a Village Speed Limit Review approved by the County Council’s North Warwickshire Area Committee with the £20,000 scheme, paid for by the Capital Programme Delegated Budget, designed to reduce the speed limit through the village to 30mph.

In Station Road, Coleshill, £10,000 was allocated towards interactive signage – This was funded separately from Gilson, this time by the County’s Transport Capital Programme Delegated Budget.

Further improvements have been made to road safety at Station Road due to the installation of mobile speed camera patrols, supported by Warwickshire Casualty Reduction Partnership.

Warwickshire County Councillor Peter Fowler said:  “Traffic speed through towns and villages is one of the main issues concerning local people and these two schemes will go a long way towards addressing their concerns.”

Councillor Ray Sweet, chair of the North Warwickshire Area Committee, said:  “It is the role of county councillors at area committee meetings to agree and approve worthwhile traffic improvement schemes across the borough and to allocate designated funding accordingly.  I’m delighted to see this two schemes in Coleshill completed and making an effective contribution to keeping accidents on the roads at bay.”

Warwickshire County Council is also undertaking a survey of HGV lorries along Station Road and traffic monitoring along Doris Road, Rose Road and Lichfield Road.
