People’s views change parking plans for Warwick District

The views of people who took part in a recent consultation on the decriminalisation of parking in the Warwick District have resulted in some changes to the proposed scheme.

Following the public consultation held late last year Warwickshire County Council is to consider revised proposals for changes to parking restrictions in Warwick District to tackle parking issues and help town centres to remain sustainable and competitive.

Roger Bennett from the County Council’s Traffic Projects Group said: “We are very grateful for all of the comments and suggestions received. Many people appear to agree with what we are trying to do and where there are areas of concern these are mainly to do with detail. We are proposing some changes to the original scheme which we think will help to overcome some of the concerns.”
The proposals will be considered at a special meeting of Warwick Area Committee at Shire Hall, 6.00pm on Tuesday, January 30th.

Mr Bennett added: “Members of the public are welcome to come along to the meeting and take part in the discussions.”

Anyone who would like to attend is asked to contact Warwickshire County Council by phoning 01926 736136 or by email to peterhunter@warwickshire.gov.uk

The Chair of Warwick Area Committee, Cllr Sarah Boad, said: “I am delighted that there appears to be general support for what is being proposed. The meeting on 30 January is the latest stage in a long consultation process and I am looking forward to further discussions before a decision is made.”

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio holder for the Environment, said: “The county council will soon be applying to the Government to take on the responsibility for parking enforcement from Warwickshire Police.

“If the proposed changes go thought residents, traders, visitors and shoppers will see the environmental benefits to our town centres. The aim is to speed up turnover of cars parking in those spaces available near the shops by the introduction of on-street pay and display charging. Many residents should also find it easier to park, as others will have to comply with parking restrictions in their zones. We want to ensure the economic viability of Warwickshire towns and this is an important step in that direction.”

The report that will be considered by Warwick Area Committee will be available to view on the Warwickshire County Council website http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk next week, and further information on the decriminalisation of parking is available at http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/decrim.
