Abbots Farm children plan their escape

Children from Abbots Farm Infant School will be getting a lesson in fire safety this week (Tuesday 30 January) as part of Warwickshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Services schools programme.

Firefighters from Rugby will be visiting the school, promoting key fire safety messages to children in year one (age 5 to 6).  During the lesson the children will be learning about the importance of fire safety and prevention. They will also get hands on experience of how to make a 999 call, stop drop and roll, learn about the risks and causes of fire and how to plan escape routes.

Schools coordinator for Rugby, Firefighter Jeff Bailey, said:
“The main aim of the course is to develop the children’s knowledge and understanding of fire safety in both the home and at school. The sessions are very hands on and provide essential experience of what to do in the event of a fire, including how to make a 999 call.”

Year 1 teacher at Abbots Farm Infant School, Mrs Lindon,  said:
“We are really pleased that the children are able to develop their fire safety skills through the schools programme.  Lessons like this help the children learn life saving skills, which can be adapted to both the home and school environment.”
