Steel pans for Studley

Children and young people in Studley have been given their very own set of steel pans.

The Studley Steel Pans Project has recently been awarded a grant, which will help pupils from Studley St. Mary’s C of E Junior School, St Mary’s Catholic Primary and Studley High School to make music together.

The project started at Studley St. Mary’s C of E Junior School when Warwickshire’s County Music Service was called in to teach steel pans as an extended school activity and to engage disaffected pupils. Headteacher, Tim Lee, quickly recognised the merits of the steel pans as a long-term community project. Thanks to an interest-free loan from Warwickshire’s County Music Service and a £1,150 grant from Stratford District Council, Studley now has its own set of pans.

Brian Noon, steel pan teacher for the County Music Service, said: “The Steel Pan Project promises to be a fantastic community initiative and it has already helped to bring young people together and improve self-confidence.”
