Firefighters in Leamington are getting ready to launch their Kitchen Fire Safety event this week (13 – 18 February), by asking – How safe is your kitchen?

The campaign is being run in partnership with MFI, on the Shires Retail Park in Leamington. Throughout the week there will be a number of competitions taking place including a colouring competition for the 0 – 5’s and a spot the hazards competition for the 6 – 11 age group. One of the prizes includes a VIP visit to Leamington Fire Station. Entry forms for the competition are available from MFI between, Thursday 15 – Sunday 18 February and the winners will be notified by 5th March 2007.

As well as taking part in the competitions, residents will also be able to receive free fire safety advice from Leamington Firefighters on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday between 10am and 4pm. Residents will also be able to find out more about our Free Home Fire Safety check service.

Crew Manager, Jerry Horne said:
“The main aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of fire risks in the kitchen, including chip pan fires, electrical fire safety and what not to put in your microwave! During the event firefighters will also be on hand to provide essential home fire safety advice and to offer free home fire safety checks to vulnerable residents including the elderly and families with young children.”

In Warwickshire last year there were 134 kitchen fires, 46 of these were in the central area. A number of these incidents including grills and cookers being left unattended and chip pan fires.
