Wind power plan for Warwickshire school

Ashlawn School and Science College in Rugby is in line to become the first school in Warwickshire to get environmentally friendly wind power.

A planning application has been submitted by Warwickshire County Council to erect a wind turbine in the grounds of the school. Funding from the Low Carbon Buildings Programme and Rugby Borough Council has supported this project.

In a bid to try and inform the public on the plans a special open evening is being held at the school tomorrow from 4pm until 6.30pm where people will be able to drop in to find out more.

The AT5-1 Wind Turbine will stand about 12m tall and produce a renewable source of energy for the school.

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “This week we have seen the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change conclude that climate changes around the world are ‘very likely’ to have a human cause.

“This once again emphasises the action we should all be taking now to tackle climate change and I’m delighted to see this proposal for the Rugby school.

“The wind turbine will not only generate some renewable energy for the school, but will also be valuable as an educational tool in teaching the science behind it, and of course its environmental benefits.”

Benefits following the installation of the wind turbine, which would be the first
of its kind at a Warwickshire school, include:

- Raising the awareness of renewable energy and the issue of climate change.
- Pupils of Ashlawn School learning more about renewable energy.
- Ashlawn school will be engaging with neighbouring schools using the turbine as an educational tool.
- It would contribute to the Warwickshire Climate Change Strategy.
