Schools celebrate Chinese New Year
Kung hei fat choy! Congratulations and be prosperous!
Pupils at Thomas Jolyffe School in Stratford chowed down on a special feast when they celebrated Chinese New Year.
Warwickshire County Council’s catering arm created a tasty themed menu for primary school children across Warwickshire to enjoy as they celebrated one of the most colourful and important events of the Chinese calendar. The Chinese New Year cuisine included Sweet ‘n’ Sour Pork, Vegetable Spring Rolls, Egg Noodles and Rice, followed by Carrot and Mandarin Orange Salad and Oriental Fruit Ice Smoothies.
Lindsay Higgins from Warwickshire’s County Caterers said: “Food is a wonderful way to learn about other cultures and we were delighted to celebrate Chinese New Year with our young customers. The menu was created to meet our healthy nutritional standards, so it was fun and balanced too.”
Chinese New Year 2007 is Year of the Pig and people born under the sign of the pig are said to be sincere, friendly, entertaining and artistic. Year 1 pupils from Thomas Jolyffe School took inspiration from the Year of the Pig to create artwork including vibrant masks and lanterns as well as presenting a special assembly about the Chinese Zodiac for the whole school.
The 2007 Chinese New Year started on February 18 and celebrations traditionally tend to last up to 15 days.
