It’s no ‘waste’ of time to have your say
Everything from nappies to composting are being tackled in a new eight-year strategy, and the people of Warwickshire can have their say.
This week has seen Warwickshire Waste Partnership launch of the draft Warwickshire Waste Minimisation Strategy, detailing how key waste issues will be tackled in the county over the next eight years.
And with the launch of the draft strategy comes the chance for people to comment on the document on how waste growth in the county can be reduced.
The deadline for comments on the strategy is March 30, 2007, and it is possible to submit comments online and view the draft strategy at http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/wastestrategy, or by downloading the questionnaire and e-mailing to glennfleet@warwickshire.gov.uk
Following the consultation the strategy will be reviewed in light of the feedback received and be presented to the Warwickshire Waste Partnership at their next meeting in June.
Warwickshire County Council’s Sustainability Group Manager, Glenn Fleet, said: “Over the last seven years the average growth rate for waste in Warwickshire has been calculated at 2.2 per cent per year. With the planned increase of new dwellings of between 39,000 and 67,000 over the period 2009-2026, it is essential that we take steps to achieve sustained reduction in waste growth.”
The strategy sets out how it is possible to reduce waste in Warwickshire at a rate of 1.25 per cent below the national growth rate average over the next eight years, giving a reduction of about ten per cent.
Key objectives include:
- Reducing waste through composting, real nappies and prevention of unwanted mail.
- Supporting work with community groups to increase the capacity for re-use and refurbishment of goods.
- Raise awareness and educate the public in Warwickshire to enable them to make informed consumer choices.
- Support the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by reducing the amount of raw material extracted/used.
