Food for thought as schools celebrate World Book Day

Pupils from primary schools across Warwickshire were given food for thought as they tucked into a special literary lunch for World Book Day last week.

Children tucked into school meals based on their favourite books when they marked the tenth anniversary of World Book Day on Thursday 1 March.

By taking a pinch of inspiration from favourite children’s books and a good measure of healthy ingredients, County Caterers wrote a storybook character menu especially for the occasion.

The Storybook Character Lunch - fit for fairytale princes and princesses - included
*Crocodile Crudites (from the Selfish Crocodile Book)
*Spellbinding Roast Beef (the ideal lunch for all trainee wizards)
*Astrosaurus Cheese and Tomato Pizza with ‘T Rex’ topping (inspired by a popular children’s book about astrosaurs!)
*Seriously Squishy Chocolate Cake
*Fairytale Fruit Platter
*All accompanied by Drinks from a Kingdom Far, Far Away

The storybook lunch is just one of Warwickshire County Council’s latest initiatives to promote healthy school meals. The healthy meals campaign has been extremely popular with the county’s primary schools which have seen a 30% rise in school meals since the start of the school year.

Lindsay Higgins of Warwickshire County Council’s catering arm said: “What better way to promote healthy school meals than by capturing a child’s imagination? We very much look forward to serving our literary lunch to our young customers.”
