Major improvements planned for Warwickshire’s libraries’ People’s Network

Warwickshire Libraries has set in motion a major update of all the public computers across the county with all 34 of the county's public libraries receiving major improvements.

Over 300 new computers are going into 34 branches across Warwickshire plus the County Record Office with many major improvements including clearer presentation of software, large coloured keyboards for children, giant print keyboards for adults with visual impairment and flat screen monitors with no on screen reflections.

The machines will use new Windows XP operating systems and will be considerably quicker.

Other features of the PCs will include universal card readers for downloading photographs in every library, DVD players and CD burners.

Customers were surveyed to get their feedback.  Their comments indicated that they would like greater access to applications such as Microsoft Office, increased space at work stations to afford greater privacy.

Edwina Cordwell, head of Libraries, Learning and Culture, said:  “For many people who do not have access to a computer at home, libraries provide an essential link, giving users the opportunity to enjoy the technology and to continue their learning.

“This major improvement to the service will be of great benefit to many people of all ages, from some of our youngest users through to the older people who make up the Silver Surfers groups around the county.”
