Are you onboard?

A Warwickshire couple are one of the first to get onboard with Warwickshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service as they take part in the National Boat Fire Safety launch.

The campaign, which was originally launched in September 2006 by Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service in partnership with the Boat Safety Scheme (BSS) is now officially being rolled out across the country as a part of the Fire Kills campaign by the Central government’s National Community Fire Safety Centre on Monday the 26 March.

Firefighters from Atherstone will be carrying out the boat fire safety check on Friday 16 March at 9.30am. The check will include assessing escape routes, checking for smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors and making sure that flammable materials are stored safely.

Area Risk Officer, Graham Vann-Turner
“Our boat fire safety scheme has been featured on a number of episodes of Waterworld and boaters are now realising that fire safety must be a priority. On the programme we featured a Brinklow family who lost everything when their narrow boat went up in flames. Lots of lessons were learned from that event and now the National Community Fire Safety Centre are launching the scheme nationally. It is a real credit to Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service and the Boat Safety Scheme!”
