Home Fire Safety Check saves home
An elderly woman’s home has been saved thanks to a recent Home Fire Safety Check carried out by Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service.
The check saw a smoke alarm installed at the property in Hurley in North Warwickshire, and at 2.45pm yesterday the alarm was triggered.
The property’s owner realised that something was wrong and contacted the fire service who attended and discovered a fault with the boiler had caused it to overheat and ignite boxes on top of it.
Firefighter Pete Vale said: “We attended with a rapid response and using breathing apparatus we entered the property. We found the source of the fire quickly.
“Thanks to the quick call out from this lady, who had the smoke alarm fitted as part of a Free Home Fire Safety Check, her home has only suffered minimal damage to the top of the boiler. If she had not been alerted, things could have been very different and we could have been dealing with a major house fire.
“From the time we first received the call to the time we left the property to head back to the station was just half an hour, demonstrating just how valuable a smoke alarm can be in preventing both serious damage to a home, and potentially saving lives.”
