Convoy exercise was a real success!

Warwickshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service joined forces with Warwickshire Police this weekend, as they took to the roads in one of the biggest convoy driving exercise ever seen in Warwickshire.

Eight fire engines, a training pump, incident response unit (IRU), seven police outriders and two police cars travelled over 70 miles as part of the exercise to ensure that should there be a major incident anywhere in the country, that both the fire service and police has the capability and resilience to mobilise the IRU and supporting appliances with a co-ordinated response. The exercise also provided valuable training for drivers to become familiar with the procedures and skills required for convoy driving.

The co-ordinator of the training exercise, Paul Hodges said:
“This is the first exercise of this size to be carried out in Warwickshire and we are pleased that it went so well. We did get a few funny looks along the way, but motorists were very accommodating and gave us the room required to get our vehicles to it’s end destination.”

The exercise began at Warwickshire County Council’s County Fleet maintenance unit in Coleshill, and then made its way along the AA46, M42, M40, A3400, M46 and the M40. The exercise took around two and a half hours to complete.
