Quilty Pleasures

An exhibition of work inspired by Warwickshire Museums’ collection is opening at the Market Hall Museum on 10 March running until 21 April.

It features the work of Leamside Textiles, a group comprising eight women from all over Warwickshire, who are interested in contemporary textile and include felt makers, embroiderers and both traditional and art quilt makers.

Most met whilst doing various City and Guilds courses in Leamington Spa five years ago. After completing their courses they decided to form a group in order to exhibit their work and to offer inspiration and mutual support to each other and still meet fortnightly at each others’ houses.

This is their third exhibition and all the work on show has been inspired by the exhibits and buildings of the Warwickshire Museum.

Visitors will see interpretations of favourite objects such as fossils, stained glass, the bees, the bear and the building’s architectural features.

The exhibition is a riot of colour and texture, with many different examples of textile working techniques on display, clearly showing the group’s incredible skills and ability as designers. Most of the work is for sale, with prices starting at £3.50.

Visitors can enter two competitions; one asks them to guess how many chocolates are locked inside a glass case in a beautiful handmade box whilst the second, deceptively difficult competition asks visitors to guess what a textile jigsaw was actually a picture of, before it was cut up.
Emma House, Museum Designer, said
“There is plenty to look at for all ages in this vivid and beautiful exhibition which is a fitting celebration of how these women encourage and inspire each other.  It offers visitors the opportunity to see and own some delightful and very individual work.”
