Stratford springs into weekend concerts

Music lovers will be treated to an array of musical styles this weekend when Stratford plays host to two County Music Service spring concerts.

Everything from classical to rock will be performed on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 March at 7.30pm at the spring concerts, which will take place at the Levi Fox Hall at Kind Edward VI School in Stratford-upon-Avon. The concerts have been organised by Warwickshire County Council’s Music Service and tickets cost £5 (£3) on the door.

Under its new conductor, Colin Touchin, Warwickshire’s County Youth Orchestra will be giving a performance at 7.30pm on Saturday 24 March. The programme will feature music by Elgar – The Serenade for Strings and the Romance for Bassoon and Orchestra – and Tchaikovsky’s 2nd Symphony, known as the ‘Little Russian’. The concert will begin with a work for wind, brass and percussion, which has been composed by Colin Touchin himself.

The County Youth Orchestra is made up of 50 young musicians from across Warwickshire; it meets on a weekly basis and gives several concerts throughout the county and further afield.  This summer it is performing at the Warwick Festival as well as going on tour to Spain to give concerts in Bilbao and Santander.  In 2009 the orchestra is planning to visit China together with the County Youth Chorale.
The County Youth Jazz Orchestra, Steel Pan Orchestra and Rock Band (known as ‘Red Kyte’) will be giving a performance at 7.30pm on Sunday 25 March.

The concert will start with music from the Steel Pans; they will be followed by ‘Red Kyte’ who will provide a selection of cover songs and original material; in the second half the Jazz Orchestra will take the stage assisted by 3 vocalists – Chloe Blackwell, Sarah Robertson and Robert Busiakiewicz - and the evening will finish with a combined piece, Jungle Boogie, with all groups playing together.

These three county groups have already earned considerable reputations for entertaining audiences throughout Warwickshire and this event promises to be full of lively entertainment.
