Having a smoke alarm saved their lives!

A family whose lives were saved by their smoke alarm know that the story could have been very different without it.

The fire started at Henley Court, Alcester on Saturday 17 March at around 22.50pm. Warwickshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service provided a rapid response and crews from Alcester, Studley, Stratford, Bidford, Kenilworth, Wellesbourne and Henley were quickly in attendance.

Station Manager, Andrew Goodman said: “When we arrived the fire had already taken hold of one of the flats in a block of four. Everyone had to be evacuated and although the fire had spread rapidly the family had managed to get out safely.  Sadly the family dog could not be saved.

"The family informed me that they were woken by their smoke alarm. I have no doubt that had they not had a working smoke alarm, they wouldn’t have been able to tell me that. This is just another example of just how valuable a smoke alarm can be. You can replace your furniture, but you could never replace your family!”

There was considerable damage to the property and it is thought that the fire started due to an electrical fault.
