Roots and Culture for Rugby’s young music makers
Young people from Rugby are getting the chance to train with professional sound and vocal engineers over the Easter holidays thanks to the town’s Roots and Culture club.
The Roots and Culture music workshops are going to be held at Hill Street Youth and Community Centre in Rugby where two studio engineers will be on hand to give advice and guidance.
A range of group and individual sessions will run from 1pm to 5pm on 3rd, 4th, 5th, 10th, 11th and 12th April. The sessions are open to 13-19 year-olds and anyone interested in attending should book in advance by contacting Dana Stewart at Hill Street on 01788 576041.
The vocal and sound engineers have been funded by the Youth Opportunity Fund thanks to a bid that was made by sixteen-year-old Latoya Hamilton who has been a long-standing member of the club.
The aim of the Youth Opportunity Fund is to involve young people, especially those who are hard to reach, in identifying positive activities and things to do.
The ‘Youth Opportunity Fund’ is a DfES initiative operated through Warwickshire County Council’s Children, Young People and Families Directorate. Warwickshire’s Positive about Young People has also supported the project by providing a youth worker to help run the sessions.
Dana Stewart of the Hill Street Youth and Community Centre said: “This is a fantastic musical opportunity for young people in Rugby. Whether you are a DJ, musician or singer the Roots and Culture sessions are giving young people the chance to get into the studio and take their music to another level.
“We appreciate that not everyone will be able to make the sessions but we are also interested in hearing from young people who would like us to take our DJ’ing equipment into their youth clubs”.
