The delegation from Tsinghua School in Shenzhen spent a week in Warwickshire visiting professionals from the county council’s Children, Young People and Families Directorate and a number of schools.

Schools in China are much larger than they are in the UK and Tsinghua School accommodates some 6,000 pupils, 1,000 of which board. Tsingua School Principal Ms. Zhou Jie led the visit, which was funded by the Chinese.

Two headteachers, Andrew Chubb of Campion School and Community College in Leamington and Trevor Nunn of Alderman Smith School and Sports College in Nuneaton, played host to the delegation and invited them into the county’s classrooms to see lessons taking place.

Marion Davis, Strategic Director for Children, Young People and Families at Warwickshire County Council said: “It has been a great pleasure to include our visitors from China in school life in Warwickshire. Teachers from both countries have learned a great deal over the week and the visit has helped strengthen the excellent ties that we have with Shenzhen."

Since 2005 Warwickshire has forged strong links with the economically booming city of Shenzhen and the county is now in a formal partnership with the city. A number of Warwickshire’s schools have been working with their Chinese counterparts to share ideas and best practice over the last two years and some schools in the county have introduced Mandarin lessons as a result of the initiative.
