Community tackling climate change
Representatives from Warwickshire County Council joined more than 100 people committed to doing something about climate change.
The event at the Royal Pump Rooms in Leamington was free and aimed to engage a wide cross section of the community locally in taking action to address climate change.
Inspired by the example of towns, villages, and communities around the country who have set up projects to become carbon neutral, the Climate Change Challenge will be attended by more than 100 representatives of community groups, schools, businesses, and individuals.
There were speakers from Ashton Hayes in Cheshire and Totnes in Devon, both of which have already set ambitious targets and started community projects. Residents were also given the opportunity to raise project ideas, get expert advice and build support in the community to get projects off to a flying start.
During the event a panel of local politicians from all parties also took questions from the floor.
The event was the brainchild of Bill Evans, chair of Warwick District Council, and is supported and sponsored by local firms Wolseley and Encraft.
Warwickshire County Council supported the event with contributions from its eco schools, transport and sustainability teams.
Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “The whole project is a good example of ways the county is beginning to deliver its Climate Change Strategy. I’m delighted to see so many parts of the community coming together for this event.”
