Sharing a challenge

A call is going out for the people of Warwickshire to follow in the footsteps of some of the county council’s most senior politicians and workers in trying car sharing for a month.

And when they start car sharing, Warwickshire County Council would like to hear of their experiences, which can then be published as `blogs’ on the county council’s website at http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/ittakes2

To submit car sharing blogs on your experiences either email sustainabletravel@warwickshire.gov.uk or fill out an online form at the address above.

Political leaders and staff at the county council have been car sharing for a month and have recorded their experiences in video diaries and blogs.

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “I’ve been car sharing when possible for some time with Leader of the county council Cllr Alan Farnell. It’s not always possible, but when we do manage to car share from Nuneaton to Warwick it gives us time to talk through council work, allows one of us to take incoming calls, and of course has environment benefits.”

And Cllr Farnell in his on line blog allowed us a personal insight into his journey stating: “However, when we can get together, my supply of sugar free polo mints does take a pounding, but that’s what car sharing is all about. Sharing!”

Karen Martin, Sustainable Travel Officer with the county council, added: “Car sharing doesn’t have to be an every day thing. If everyone car shared just one day a week, our roads would have 20 per cent less cars on them, reducing congestion and it is a very sensible option for people commuting to work in Warwickshire as it offers the comfort of the car with an environmental and financial incentive.”

Cllr Heatley said businesses may be interested in started their own car sharing schemes in order to help with parking problems in the workplace and become more environmentally friendly.
