A Lesson for Life

Stratford-upon-Avon College is soon to launch a ‘Young Driver’s Safety Campaign’ in partnership with Warwickshire County Council, Warwickshire Police and Warwickshire Fire & Rescue Service. The campaign is in memory of Anthony Newmarsh, a Stratford-upon-Avon College student, who tragically died in a road collision last year.

Running from 16th - 20th April, the educational campaign will raise awareness of a diversity of issues relating to road safety including modes of transport and risks, drink and drugs, speed, concentration and fatigue, and the consequences of negligence - grief and trauma. The event, which will be integrated into the College’s tutorial programme, follows the College’s participation in the Warwickshire County Council’s ‘Driving Ambition Campaign’, as shown on ITV Central News last month.

The carefully structured programme will include emotive presentations by representatives from the Warwickshire County Council’s Road Safety team, car crash rescue demonstrations by the Fire and Rescue Service and a motorcycle wreckage display and storyboard by Warwickshire Police.

Commenting on the campaign, Stan Milewski, Warwickshire County Council’s Senior Road Safety Officer, said:

"We’re delighted to be taking part in this important road safety event at the College - young drivers are at a much higher risk of having a crash than older drivers and are therefore at risk of losing their lives or being seriously injured on the road.  The objective of the event is to prevent young people of today becoming tomorrow’s casualties".

In an attempt to achieve a long-term, permanent change in the attitude and behaviour of young drivers, it is anticipated that the campaign will become an annual College event.
