Schools visit China to explore Olympic opportunities
PE teachers from Warwickshire have been to China to create better physical education and sporting opportunities for the county ahead of the 2012 Olympics.
Eight PE teachers, Warwickshire County Council’s Inspector of Physical Education and the Director of Greater Warwickshire Sports Partnership visited China to share best practice and see how the country has developed physical education and sports in the lead up to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
The week-long visit was organised by Warwickshire County Council and funded by the DfES. The group toured the Olympic Sports Centre at Guangzhou and a number of physical education and sport facilities across the Guandong Province. The delegation also spent time at primary, middle and secondary schools in the province so that they could exchange ideas with their Chinese counterparts and see first-hand how schools are promoting sport and healthy lifestyles.
Alan Lindsay, Inspector of Physical Education for Warwickshire County Council, led the visit. He said: “The 2012 Olympics will be a wonderful opportunity for both the country and the county and we want to help young people in Warwickshire reach their full potential. We learned a great deal from the visit which will help us to develop further physical education and sporting provision in our schools and local communities.”
