Lowering speed limits for Warwickshire villages
A review of speed limits in Warwickshire’s villages has been receiving praise from local residents, and this summer will see the next wave of changes.
Since 2002 Warwickshire County Council has been carrying out a systematic review of village speed limits.
The Village Speed Limit Review considers all villages that do not have a 30mph speed limit and more than 30 villages have benefited from this review so far. Works for many villages on ‘B’ class roads has commenced and road users may have noticed recently reduced speed limits coming into force in Lighthorne Heath, Fillongley and Stoneleigh:
Lighthorne Heath
New 40mph speed limit with central refuges, vehicle activated signs and improved village gateway signs
Fillongley
New 30mph and 40mph speed limits with vehicle activated signs and improved village gateway signs
Stoneleigh
New 40mph speed limit with improved village gateway signs.
Over this summer the next villages to have speed reduction works put in place will include:
Little Alne
New 40mph speed limit with improved village gateway signs.
Kineton
Extended 30mph limit to protect the school, improvements to the existing 40mph speed limit to achieve better driver compliance, vehicle activated signs and improved village gateway signs for Kineton and Little Kineton.
Stretton on Dunsmore
New 30mph speed limit with road narrowings, mini roundabout, vehicle activated signs and improved village gateway signs
Harborough Magna
New 30mph speed limit with road narrowings, vehicle activated signs and improved village gateway signs
Katrina Pedlar, Warwickshire County Council’s Project Leader on the review, said: “I am pleased to confirm that every village treated has benefited from a reduction in vehicle speeds and there has been a very positive response to this review from Parish Councils and residents.
“Public consultation is ongoing for the remaining villages on “B” roads which includes Princethorpe, Bulkington, Earlswood Common and Mancetter. Works will be undertaken once all public consultation is completed.
“Initial investigation into villages without 30mph speed limits on ‘C’ class roads is also underway with more than 30 villages throughout the county identified so far. As the review progresses, we will be able to give more details about the timescale for dealing with particular villages.”
Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio holder for the Environment, said: “This systematic review of village speed limits is enabling many new limits to be introduced helping to reduce vehicle speeds and improve the quality of village life in Warwickshire.
“The opportunity is also taken to reduce sign clutter where possible by removing old and redundant signage, thereby further improving the village environment. ”
