Local historian to give Eliot talk
A local historian and champion of famed local writer George Eliot is giving a talk at Warwick Library next week to commemorate the writer.
John Burton, chairman of the George Eliot Fellowship, will present a talk and slide show entitled ‘George Eliot and Scenes Revisited’ celebrating the 150th anniversary of the publication of ‘Scenes of Clerical Life’.
John is a former English teacher and keen local historian who has had five books published. Now a freelance writer and photographer, he is currently working on a new local history project on the ribbon weaving industry in Bedworth.
The talk takes place at Warwick Library at 7pm on Wednesday 25th April. It is the latest in a line of talks brought to the library in a partnership between Warwickshire Libraries and Warwick Books which has so far seen a number of authors give talks about their work.
These have included gardener Stefan Buczacki, novelist Katie Fforde, former head of Channel 4 Sir Jeremy Isaacs and political cartoonist Gerald Scarfe among many others.
Kate Mackie of Warwickshire County Council’s libraries service said: “George Eliot is one of the most fascinating and enduring figures in the county’s history and few people know more about her and her works than John Burton. We are delighted that he can share his knowledge with us and are grateful to our partners at Warwick Books for their help in securing the services of another first class writer.”
Tickets cost £2 and are available in advance from the library or from Warwick Books. For more information, contact 01926 412189.
