Preparing a new generation to tackle environmental problems

A new generation of school children, college and university students are soon to be offered the chance to develop skills to tackle problems such as climate change

Warwickshire County Council has recognised that protection of the environment has to be faced as a reality and is now looking to the next generation of young people to develop the knowledge and skills needed to help preserve the planet’s delicate natural balance.

The county council is beginning the development of an Education for Sustainable Development Strategy which will identify how to carry this forward in Warwickshire’s educational establishments.

For example, this could mean providing people with the knowledge and know how to develop, manufacture and service wind turbines, solar panels and energy efficient products, as well as providing information about how to grow and manage crops to provide energy.

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “Providing the appropriate knowledge and skills in our school, colleges and universities is of paramount importance for the future economy of Warwickshire.

“If we do not have these in place, then we as a county will not be able to deliver what is necessary to sustain our local environment. Students, teachers, lecturers, businesses and organisations must know how to develop and deliver the courses, training and research to make Warwickshire’s future sustainable.”
