Young prize winners get a VIP tour!

Young firefighting enthusiasts are set to get a VIP tour of Leamington fire station as part of their prize for winning a Kitchen Fire Safety competition.

The competition was run by, Warwickshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service in partnership with MFI as part of a drive to reduce the amount of kitchen fires in Leamington, Warwick and Kenilworth.
The young winners who have been named as Joanne Godfrey, aged 10 and Emma Robertson, aged 5 are both from the Warwick district. Joanna has won the over six category and Emma has won the under six category.

Crew Manager, Jerry Horne said:
“We were really pleased to see that so many young people have the basic awareness of fire safety and were able to spot a number of the deliberate danger points in the kitchen.  The competition was held in March at MFI in Leamington, where a kitchen was set up with specific danger points for the children to see. The children then had to fill in a competition entry and circle as many of the potential fire dangers they could spot. Members of red watch judged the winning entries and now both Emma and Joanne will be getting a VIP tour of the station.
“We would like to say a big thank you to MFI in Leamington for providing us with a kitchen to demonstrate the dangers and also for helping us with the competitions run throughout the week.”

In Warwickshire last year there were 138 kitchen fires, 43 of these were in the central area. A number of these incidents included grills and cookers being left unattended.
