Park Lane is a smooth operator when it comes to healthy food
A cook at a primary school in Nuneaton is encouraging children to eat their greens thanks to a special smoothie reward scheme.
School cook Karen Woolaston of Park Lane Primary School in Nuneaton was so inspired by a school food conference that she attended with other county council staff that she has started two pioneering new initiatives to encourage pupils to eat healthy food.
A smoothie reward scheme is operating at the school, where children who eat all their fruit and vegetables collect ticks on a card. The class with the most ticks for the week receive a smoothie the following Monday during assembly.
Children have become so fanatical about food over the last few weeks that Karen and her colleague Sarah have given up their time to introduce a special cookery class where Key Stage 2 pupils have been learning to make healthy fajitas, cookies, pizza and of course, smoothies.
Sandra Russell of Warwickshire’s County Caterers said: “Both of these initiatives have been a great success and are a shining example of a whole school approach to healthy food. Karen is a very enthusiastic member of our team and a great ambassador for the service.”
County Caterers have been working hard to promote healthy school meals with a variety of initiatives. Catering supervisors were recently invited by the county council to attend the School Food Trust ‘Cooks for Success Conference’. Karen Woolaston, like many other catering staff across Warwickshire, has been really inspired by the conference.
