Building on skills in Rugby
A year on from the opening of a brand new construction skills centre in the heart of Rugby is to see the first five trainees gain their qualifications.
Situated on the Webb Ellis Industrial Estate, Rugby, the centre is based on the very successful partnership model that opened in Nuneaton in September 2003 and has assisted more than 200 people in gaining construction skills.
And now the Rugby centre is to see its first five trainees receive a foundation qualification in Building Craft Occupations.
This training is open to young people aged 14-16 and unemployed adults and by offering training at a foundation level gives a stepping stone to its trainees, a provision which did not exist in Rugby until the Opportunities Centre opened its doors.
The project provides essential foundation level training in five key construction areas, equipping all who attend with the skills they need to either work in the industry or to engage in higher level training.
Adults are encouraged to gain their CSCS card, enabling them to work on commercial building sites.
The centre links in with many agencies to help trainees in their search for employment in the area and provides support to enable them to stay with the centre during the training.
Cllr Chris Saint, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio holder for Economic Development, said: “Undoubtedly this partnership venture is meeting a need within the community and we are very proud to be part of it.
"My congratulations go to the first five trainees for all their hard work over the past year.”
The centre has come about in Rugby thanks to Warwickshire County Council, Warwickshire College and Rugby Borough Council, together with financial backing from the Rugby Group Benevolent Fund all working together.
