Children find treasure through feel-good art project
Children from three of the county’s primary schools are taking part in a pioneering new art project which is all about promoting emotional wellbeing.
Treasure Art Club, a multi-agency initiative developed by The Treasure Project with support from Warwickshire County Council’s Social Services Art Budget, aims to help children express their emotions through a host of artistic activities including splatter painting, clay modelling, drawing and collage.
Children from Clapham Terrace Community Primary School in Leamington, Cawston Grange Primary School in Rugby and St Giles Junior School in Exhall are taking part in the pilot scheme.
The ten-week after-school club involves a professional artist and an emotional wellbeing project coordinator who encourage seven to eleven year olds to explore a variety of scenarios that involve expressing different feelings.
The art clubs are being co-ordinated by the county’s Treasure Project, which works together with whole school communities to promote emotional wellbeing.
Area co-ordinator, Helen Du’Mont from Warwickshire County Council’s Education Psychology Service, said: “Children may find they are more able to explore and express their feelings through the mediums of painting and drawing.
"This worthwhile scheme encourages children to develop their emotional wellbeing through creativity and circle time.”
Circle time is a group activity in which pupils sit down together in a circle so they face each other with the purpose of furthering understanding of themselves and of one another.
Circle Time boosts interpersonal skills, strengthens relationships and enhances self-confidence while allowing the class and its teacher to have fun together.
