Older people get to the CORE of the problem at open day
The representatives of Warwickshire’s CORE (Counsel for Older Residents) groups met at the United Reform Church in a day that saw them share ideas on how to continue living independently.
The day was organised by Rugby’s CORE in partnership with Warwickshire County Council.
It featured workshops and discussion groups on the pensions service, direct payments, CORE groups and their aims for helping older people throughout Warwickshire.
Delegates were also advised in a workshop on the best ways to access the services of PHILLIS (Promoting Health and Independence through Low Level Integrated Support), the County Council’s recently launched scheme which brings together various partners to offer older people help in maintain their home, shopping, socialising or learning a new skill.
Representatives from Rugby Chinese Elderly Daycare, Rugby West Indian Association, the Asian community, the Benn Partnership and the WRVS Friendship representing rural communities were all at the day.
Amanda Burn of Warwickshire County Council said: “What the delegates learnt will equip them with the knowledge they will need to access services, make the most out of their leisure time, claim appropriate benefits and know where to go for help if and when they need it.
"We do not assume people will always know what to do in order to live independently and enjoy a high quality of life; that is why days like this can be so beneficial to those who attend.”
Brenda Hardy is chair of Rugby’s CORE and echoed these sentiments, saying: “We were so pleased to see so many people come together and share their experiences.
"We have all passed on bits of invaluable information and because so many communities were represented on the day, we are confident that the information we shared will filter its way back to the people within these communities.”
Anybody aged over 50 who would like more advice on services for older people can call Brenda Hardy on 01788 574258 or would be welcomed at the CORE meeting, held on the first Thursday of each month at 10am, at United Reform Church on Hillmorton Road.
